THOMAS HOEPKER

FEATURE DOCUMENTARY // IN DEVELOPMENT // THOMAS HOEPKER IS ONE OF THE OUTSTANDING PHOTOGRAPHERS OF HIS GENERATION; HIS PHOTOGRAPHS HAVE ADVANCED TO BECOME VISUAL MEMORY IMAGES OF AN ENTIRE ERA. STYLISH ICONS THAT ALMOST EVERYONE KNOWS, SUCH AS THE BURNING TOWERS OF THE WORLD TRADE CENTER AND THE UNIQUE BLACK_AND_WHITE PHOTOS FROM THE SERIENS WITH MUHAMMAD ALI. THE 82-YEAR-OLD HAS BEEN LIVING IN NY FOR OVER THREE DECADES. BUT MOST OF THE TIME HE IS ON THE ROAD, STILL TIRELESSY SEARCHING FOR MOTIFS AND CAPTURE THE WORLD IN PICTURES.
AT THE END OF THE LAST YEAR THOMAS WAS DIAGNOSED WITH ALZHEIMER´S DISEASE. THE MAN WHOSE ART BECAME A COLLECTIVE MEMORY IS SLOWLY LOOSING HIS OWN. AND SO HE EMBARKS ON ONE LAST GREAT JURNEY, A ROAD TRIP THROUGH THE USA, TOGETHER WITH HIS WIFE CHRISTINE. THE FILM ACCOMPANIES THE GREAT MAGNUM PHOTOGRAPHER THROUGH THIS FINAL STAGE OF HIS LIFE, EXPLORES THE SIGNIFICANCE OF HIS WORK AND CREATIVITY, AND DRAWS A PORTRAIT OF A PERSON WHO ENCOUNTERS AN ILLNESS WITH HUMILITY AND HUMOUR THAT IS CONSIDERED ONE OF THE GREAT SOCIAL CHALLENGES IN DEALING WITH OLD AGE.
